Marvel Studios has hired actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to play the Magnum in a stand-alone series that will premiere on Disney+.
According to an article published by The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, the actor would play Simon Williams. The main character is a powerful man with ionic energy control skills.
Williams is the wealthy industrialist’s son, and Stark Industries’ rivalry forced his father’s business, Williams Innovations, out of business.
Simon seeks help from Baron Zemo out of desperation. The villain grants him abilities while ordering him to sabotage and later betray the Avengers.
The superhero genre has previously included Abdul-Mateen II. In Watchmen, he played Doctor Manhattan, and in Aquaman, he played Black Manta.
This project will be directed by Daniel Cretton, who also produced Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Andrew Guest will write the main script. Who is this obscure Marvel Comics hero, after all?
Diehard Marvel Cinematic Universe followers may recall Nathan Fillion’s debut as Magnum in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Still, the cameo never made it to the final cut.
