Since the initial sneak peek at D23, excitement for Disney’s live-action rendition of The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, has steadily increased. Disney has released the first official trailer, offering a deeper glimpse into Ariel’s underwater world as the release draws closer.
The new trailer provides a closer look at Ariel’s story and its prominent characters, emphasizing her longing to join the world above the sea. It includes scenes of her rescuing Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King), their developing romance, and the reaction of her father, King Triton (Javier Bardem). The trailer also introduces Melissa McCarthy as the evil sea witch, Ursula, who adds a touch of campy drama to the film.
The latter part of the trailer features a reprise of “Part of Your World” and provides a closer look at Ariel’s underwater kingdom. Additionally, it previews the iconic musical number “Under the Sea,” which won Howard Ashman and Alan Menken Oscars for Best Original Song in 1989.
Rob Marshall will direct the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, with a screenplay written by David Magee and Jane Goldman. Alan Menken, the original film’s soundtrack composer, will be back to create new songs for the movie, together with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will also produce the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt, and John Deluca.
