In the 2022 Damien Chazelle Film Babylon,’ Margot Robbie plays Nellie LaRoy, a self-destructive silent film star in the passionate Hollywood of the Roaring Twenties.
While discussing the film with W magazine, Robbie revealed that she improvised a kiss with co-star Brad Pitt during a party scene that wasn’t originally in the script.
However, in December, Pitt disclosed during an interview with the Australian news show ‘The Project that he asked the filmmakers to include the kiss in the script, as he didn’t want to miss the opportunity to kiss Robbie.
Robbie explained, “In ‘Babylon’, Nellie kisses a lot of people. I actually improvised a kiss that wasn’t in the script. We were doing a party scene, and Nellie goes up to Brad Pitt’s character and Katherine Waterston’s character, and I was like, ‘F*** it. I’m just gonna kiss them and see what happens. They were a little bit shocked. I don’t know if it made it into the movie.”
It wasn’t in the script – Robbie said. But I thought: When will I get to kiss Brad Pitt again? I’ll try. I said, “Damien, I think Nellie should kiss Jack.” And Damien: “Well, she could – wait, wait. You want to kiss Brad Pitt.” And I: “Oh, sue me. This opportunity may never come again.” And he said, ‘It works for the character,’ and I was like, ‘I think it does.’ And so the kiss remained.
‘Babylon’ is a story about multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood. Although Robbie is married to film producer Tom Ackerley, and Pitt is currently dating someone, they both seemed to have enjoyed their on-screen kiss. According to Robbie, the kiss with Pitt was “just great,” When the director asked for a retake, she thought, “Oh, great.”
