Netflix has exciting news for fans of the hit retro series Stranger Things. The streaming giant has announced an official animated continuation of the show, produced by the original creators, The Duffer Brothers and director Shawn Levy, alongside Dan Cohen and Eric Robles.
Set in the 1980s, Stranger Things has been a hit program for Netflix since 2016, following the adventures of citizens in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. The series pays homage to iconic 1980s properties such as Dungeons & Dragons, The Goonies, E.T., and Stephen King’s works.
This new animated series comes ahead of Stranger Things season 5, the final outing of the blockbuster series. The Duffer Brothers express their excitement at seeing their dream come true, having always longed for an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons they grew up loving. Eric Robles and his team created incredible scripts and artwork for the series.
An animated continuation of the Stranger Things universe makes perfect sense, as Netflix previously experimented with an animated spinoff of one of their hit shows, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
However, Stranger Things is inundated in the pop culture of the 1980s, and an animated series feels like a more organic way to keep the retro atmosphere alive.
The 1980s saw the heyday of animated spinoffs of popular franchises, including Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Little Shop of Horrors, Rambo, Robocop, and The Karate Kid.
It remains unclear which members of the Stranger Things cast will return for the animated series. However, keeping the retro atmosphere alive will be vital to keeping it feeling like an organic part of the universe.
