David Schwimmer was one of the stars of Friends , one of the most popular and beloved series in the history of world television, and played the character Ross Geller. The actor revealed what he would like to see in a possible reboot of the attraction.
In an interview with The Guardian, Schwimmer addressed the issue of diversity, something that the actor himself admitted that Friends did not explore very well. Because of this, he stated that he would like to see a new version of the series starring only black or Asian actors.
“Maybe we should have a Friends with an all-black or Asian cast. But I was aware of the lack of diversity and always campaigned for Ross to date women of other ethnicities. One of the first girlfriends I had on the show was an Asian girl, and later on, I dated a black girl. It was a very conscious request on my part.”
These two Ross girlfriends mentioned by the actor are Julie, who appeared in some episodes of the second season; and Charlie, who participated in the last two seasons of Friends.
Despite this, Schwimmer said he enjoyed seeing the series deal with Judaism in one episode.
“It was interesting to see how the show dealt with Judaism. It wasn’t anything too special, but I was happy to see an episode that wasn’t just about Christmas. There was also Hanukkah (a famous Jewish festival that takes place at Christmas time) and I was pleased to see that we recognized the religious differences”, he commented.
