In a recent interview, Chris Hemsworth, known for his role as Thor, addressed the criticisms of renowned directors Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino against the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
While Scorsese has previously expressed concerns about the industry impact of Marvel films, Tarantino recently stated that Marvel Studios fails to create movie stars and instead focuses on generating substantial profits.
Hemsworth openly responded to Scorsese and Tarantino’s comments, expressing his disappointment. He referred to the two directors as his heroes but acknowledged that their opinions had hampered any chance of working with them in the future. “That’s super depressing when I hear that, “There goes two of my heroes I won’t work with. I guess they’re not a fan of me.”
Despite this, The Star Trek actor expressed appreciation for his involvement in the MCU, considering it a privilege to be part of the sizeable cinematic family. He remarked on the films’ positive influence on encouraging people to go to the movies, but he remained uncertain about any potential adverse effects on other productions.
The Extraction actor stressed the importance of avoiding unnecessary scrutiny within the industry, acknowledging its inherent fragility. He acknowledged the lack of definitive answers but emphasized the ongoing efforts to navigate and improve the filmmaking landscape. “Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of other films, I don’t know. I don’t love when we start scrutinizing each other when there’s so much fragility in the business and in this space of the arts as it is.”
During an episode of the “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast last year, Quentin Tarantino, the acclaimed filmmaker behind “Kill Bill,” made a notable statement linking the absence of movie stars in Hollywood to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
“Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is … you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that, I think that’s been said a zillion times. But it’s these franchise characters that become a star.”
