During an interview with Variety to promote the film Seberg, in which Anthony Mackie stars alongside Stewart, the actor suggested that Stewart portray a gay female version of Captain America.
Kristen Stewart’s journey in the film industry has been marked by notable performances, including her portrayal of Jean Seberg in the 2019 film directed by Benedict Andrews. Seberg delved into the story of the iconic ’60s fashion figure and her unfortunate victimization by the FBI due to her involvement in left-wing activism.
The film depicted a false narrative spun by the FBI, alleging a pregnancy resulting from an affair between Seberg and civil rights activist Hakim Jamal, played by Anthony Mackie. The character’s tragic fate was portrayed as a consequence of the ensuing paranoia, leading to her alleged suicide.
However, Kristen Stewart clarified in an interview with Variety that these details were entirely fabricated for the film. She acknowledged that such misrepresentations are occasionally imposed on celebrities more superficially.
Stewart highlighted the complex dynamics of being part of the entertainment industry, where one’s public image can often feel out of control and divergent from personal reality. Despite the challenges, she expressed a more tempered approach to navigating these circumstances.
During the same period, Stewart shared her experiences regarding comic book adaptations. She revealed that in the past, she had been advised to alter her public behavior, discouraging her from openly expressing affection towards her girlfriend, as it might hinder her chances of landing a role in a Marvel movie. “I have fully been told, ‘If you just like do yourself a favor, and don’t go out holding your girlfriend’s hand in public, you might get a Marvel movie.”
However, Stewart staunchly rejected such limitations and embraced her authentic self. “I don’t want work with people like that.”
It is worth noting that Stewart clarified her earlier remarks, emphasizing that her mention of Marvel was merely an example and that she holds no grievances towards the renowned comic book powerhouse. She humorously suggested that Marvel would welcome the opportunity to cast LGBTQ+ actors as superheroes. “I’m sure they would love to hire the gay kids to be superheroes.”
Anthony Mackie, who sat alongside Stewart during the interview, was asked which Marvel character his colleague should portray. In response, he enthusiastically advocated for Stewart to take on the role of a gay Captain America, explicitly mentioning the character Falcon. “I think [Stewart] should be the gay female Falcon Captain America,” Mackie said.
