Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s success largely depended on the wholesome performances of its cast, including Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, and Terry Crews, who added personality to the cops’ hilarious mishaps while also bringing depth to emotional scenes.
The show’s personal and professional guest appearances contributed to its overall success. In addition to the regular cast, Brooklyn Nine-Nine also featured cameos from Parks & Recreation and New Girl stars and the actors’ close friends. Some of these cameos, which included the real-life partners of some of the show’s actors, provided an extra layer of sentimentality to the series.
Joanna Newsom As Caroline St. Jacques Renard
Andy Samberg’s connections were apparent throughout the run of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His friends and fellow members of The Lonely Island, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, made cameo appearances in a few episodes.
In the series finale, “The Last Day,” Samberg’s wife, Joanna Newsom, played Caroline St. Jacques Renard, the associate principal cellist for the Berlin Philharmonic. While Holt recognized her talent, Jake dismissed her as “some nerd with a great violin.” Caroline fired back, calling him “the ugly one who made fun of my cello.”
Newsom and Samberg got married in 2013, and she also appeared in Samberg’s mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. She has also acted in the series Portlandia and the movie Inherent Vice.
David Fumero As Melvin Stermley
In season 5, episode 15 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, “The Puzzle Master,” Melvin Stermley played a prominent role. Melvin was a crossword creator for Saturday newspapers and worked as a swimwear model. When his puzzles were linked to a series of murders, he sought the help of 99th Precinct detectives Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago (played by Melissa Fumero).
Although Jake and Amy were dating and eventually married in the season 5 finale, there was no romantic involvement between Melvin and Amy. However, the truth is that the actor portraying Melvin, David Fumero, is Melissa Fumero’s husband, and they have been married since 2007.
Beth Dover As Janice
In the starting seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Charles Boyle’s character revolved significantly around his engagement with Vivian, which was later called off. During a happier time in his relationship with Vivian, Boyle and his best friend Jake met Janice, a friendly employee at a stationery store who suggested ideas for wedding invitations.
Janice was particularly impressed with Boyle’s handwriting and even recommended that he pursue a career in calligraphy. While Janice and Boyle did not end up together in the show, their real-life counterparts are romantically involved.
Janice was portrayed by actress Beth Dover, the wife of Joe Lo Truglio, who plays Boyle. Lo Truglio and Dover married in 2014, around the same time they filmed their scene in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Danielle Aubuchon As Jenny
In season 5 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Jake and Rosa went undercover in prison in the two-part episode “The Big House.” While Rosa’s story unfolded in a women’s prison, Dirk Blocker’s character Hitchcock made a hilarious appearance as a guest, supposedly visiting Rosa but making out with another inmate named Jenny.
Despite Hitchcock’s lack of luck with women on the show, in real life, Blocker is a committed husband to Danielle Auvuchon, who played Jenny in the episode. Married since 1990, the two actors shared a brief but passionate scene on the show.
