The much-loved 2009 blockbuster film Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, is currently in theatres. Similar to its predecessor, this next installment of the story about Pandora’s blue aliens is soaring to the two billion dollar mark at the box office. Speaking with Variety at the event of Golden Globes, James Cameron explains the reason behind Avatar 2 massive success.
I’m not thinking of it in those terms; I’m thinking of it in the terms of we’re going back to theatres around the world. They’re even going back to theatres in China where they’re having this big Covid surge. We’re saying as a society, ‘We need this! We need to go to theatres’. Enough with the streaming already! I’m tired of sitting on my a*s.

“The Way of Water” has made over $1.7 billion and is currently the seventh highest-grossing film of all time. Its international box office total is over $1.19 billion, making it the fifth highest-grossing international release, following only “Avatar,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Titanic,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” This means that the director, Cameron, has three of history’s top five international releases.
