After a career of 10+ years, Chris Hemsworth is ready to slow down. After a revelation that he has Alzheimer’s disease, a neurological condition that impairs patients’ memory and cognition, he has a genetic predisposition.
He learns during a medical checkup that he has genetic markers that raise his risk of developing the condition by eight to ten times during an episode of Limitless. A Disney+ series that follows the actor on a quest to maintain his body as healthy and youthful as possible.
The Darren Aronofsky and Hemsworth series for Disney+ explores the cutting-edge science that is upending preconceived notions about the human body. It provides fascinating insights into how we can tap into our bodies’ superpowers to fight disease, perform better, and even slow down aging.
Hemsworth claimed in a Vanity Fair interview that the revelation made him reevaluate his life. It convinced him to take a hiatus from acting to spend additional time with his family. “Once I finish promoting Limitless, I will take a lot of time off.”
Hemsworth revealed that his grandfather has been living with Alzheimer’s for a few years now and that he hardly remembers anything. He recalled that his predisposition strongly indicates that the disease may develop in the future, but it is not a sentence. “He speaks in Dutch his mother tongue and English and then mixes the two with some other invented words as well,” said the star.
“It’s not like they handed me a letter of resignation from life as an actor.” According to Hemsworth, Disney proposed releasing a cut of Limitless that hid the diagnosis, but the star denied the suggestion.
“Look, if this is a motivator for somebody to take better care of themselves and also understand that there are measures you can take – then fantastic,” said the actor. He said he wanted the revelation to be done honestly, without a hyper-dramatization done by entertainment.
