Fans have been wondering whether there would be a spin-off of Better Call Saul or another character from the original Breaking Bad series since the show’s run ended. They even have a list of possibilities ready for the creators since they are urged to learn more about this reality.
The creators can develop a plot focusing only on Hank (Dean Norris), or a more sinister one with Gus Fringe (Giancarlo Esposito) as the protagonist, or the most anticipated one, starring Jonathan Banks as a younger Mike Ehrmantraut and taking place in the 1970s when he was a cop.
With the conclusion of season 6, Bob Odekirk and Rhea Seahorn’s characters Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler’s tales were put to rest on Better Call Saul. Many people questioned if the show’s creators intended to continue developing the Breaking Bad universe after it ended.
When asked if a spin-off was possible, director Vince Gilligan acknowledged that he could do more with the Breaking Bad world and that he probably will in the future, especially if the other projects he has in mind fail.
“I can definitely imagine revisiting it. Selfishly, I’d like to do so to keep this thing going. But without naming any names, I look around at some of the worlds, the universes, the stories that I love, whether they’re on TV or in the movies. And I think there’s a certain point, and it’s hard to define, where you’ve done too much in the same universe. Just leave it alone.”
Whether there is still opportunity for growth, Gilligan thinks that the moment has come to try something new. Jumping directly back into the same universe might be a mistake seen all too frequently in television and movies these days, claims the Better Call Saul creator.
