The highly anticipated film, “Poor Things,” has recently released a compelling teaser featuring Emma Stone in the lead role as Bella Baxter.
The movie is based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Scottish author and illustrator Alasdair Gray. The novel’s unique style and preoccupations that include s*x, socialism, and typesetting have gained widespread acclaim.
‘Poor Things’ Teaser Trailer
Bella Baxter is a young pregnant woman who is reanimated with the brain of her unborn child, leading her to develop abnormally fast and become her mother and daughter. She is portrayed as a curious, intelligent, compassionate, and s*xually voracious character who yearns for worldly knowledge.
The film’s cast includes Willem Dafoe as Dr. Godwin Baxter, the medical doctor who brings Bella back to life, and Mark Ruffalo as Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and passionate lawyer who steals Bella away on a whirlwind adventure across continents.
Ramy Youssef’s Max McCandless is Godwin’s friend and colleague, while Jerrod Carmichael’s Harry Astley is an English gentleman Bella meets on her travels.
The trailer offers a glimpse of the steamship tour that Bella and Wedderburn embark on. Still, the book also features other adventures, such as a spell in a Parisian brothel and Godwin and McCandless spending time in Glasgow while Bella is away.
Although the teaser is only 30 seconds long and features minimal dialogue, it captures the essence of the movie and the intriguing characters. The teaser trailer pays homage to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein story, which Gray used as a basis for his book.
Director Yorgos Lanthimos and screenwriter Tony McNamara have heavily stylized the movie, giving it a fantastical feel. At the same time, the book takes place in a semi-realistic Victorian world with Gothic touches.
