Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, is set to play the second incarnation of Spider-Woman in Sony’s upcoming Madame Web movie.
The character Sweeney plays is Julia Carpenter, who succeeded Jessica Drew as Spider-Woman in Marvel Comics. This news comes from reliable industry insider Jeff Sneider of The Hot Mic podcast.
Madame Web, the highly anticipated MCU debut of Dakota Johnson, is set to hit theaters in February of next year. Johnson plays the clairvoyant character Madame Web, who first appeared in the 1980 comic Amazing Spider-Man #210.
Sweeney joined the cast of Madame Web in March of last year in an undisclosed role. It was just now that it was determined which version of Madame Web Johnson would be playing. Suppose Sweeney’s character is indeed Julia Carpenter. In that case, it suggests that Johnson is playing the role of Cassandra Webb, as Julia inherited the part of Madame Web after Cassandra’s death in the comics.
Julia Carpenter first appeared in Marvel Super Heroes #7 in 1984. Initially wearing a black and white costume, she became known as Arachne on the pages of Ms. Marvel in 2006 before taking on the role of Madame Web in 2010’s Amazing Spider-Man #637. Created by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck, Julia’s original costume inspired Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s black symbiote suit, which he acquired in Secret Wars #8.
